If you’ve been planning a road trip in Spain, have you considered stopping over at some of Spain’s most famous Paradores? A Parador is a Spanish term for an old building which has now been converted into a modern, stylish hotel along the most important routes between cities. Many of them are a few hundred years old and still carry that same look and feel as they once did when they were inhabited by Spaniards of centuries gone by. The countryside or town they are situated in has not changed in more than two hundred years, so the sights you see probably existed when these buildings were first completed – so you can enjoy the same views as monks or figures of nobility used to.

The concept behind the Paradores is to immerse visitors and tourists into Spain’s culture and history. Unlike coastal resorts, the hotels embody a sort of splendor and excitement which can only be found in historic buildings. Here are some of our favourites.

Parador de Tortosa, Catalonia
A four-star hotel which once used to be a castle inhabited by Spain’s royalty. Tortosa, a historic town between Barcelona and Valencia, is best known for its gothic cathedral which dates back to the 14th century. Spacious rooms with tradionally styled for poster beds and bright colours.

Parador de Cuenca, Castile La Mancha
This is probably one of the most unusual luxury hotels in Spain. Located in Cuenca, it once used to be a monastery in the region of Castille La Mancha. It was ideally placed in the Hoz del Huécar ravine which is directly opposite the beautiful rocky plateau of Cuenca.

Parador de Granada, Andalusia
Housed in the grounds of Granada’s famous Alhambra palace, one of the most historic and famous buildings in Spain. In the autonomous region of Andalusia, the Parador was originally built in the 15th century. This former monastery offers visitors and tourists a unique opportunity to spend their nights at the famous gardens of Alhambra.
