This month I’d like to address a subject that has very probably touched the lives of all our readers in some way, either personally or through a relative, friend or loved one: Cancer.

Despite tremendous advances in screening and early diagnosis, Cancer is still one of the largest single causes of mortality. Some types of cancer are increasing and a diagnosis is still widely perceived as a death sentence. Recently I received an email containing a one-line prayer and the request to pass it on. It read:  ”Dear God. I pray for the cure of cancer. Amen.” Of course the subtext of the prayer is: “Cancer is still incurable, so all we can do is pray”. Whilst I would never underestimate the power of prayer, I have to say that this is a dour message to pass on, offering little in the way of hope or comfort to anyone afflicted with this disease.

THERE ALREADY IS A CURE FOR CANCER!

Actually, there are tens of thousands, if not millions of cures for cancer. Its generic name is: “The power of Human Beings to heal themselves,” while its specific names are the names of all those inspiring souls who have claimed that power and through whatever means, have healed themselves of cancer. Perhaps you personally know such a person, maybe more than one. The alternative/ holistic shelves of our bookstores carry dozens of books written by and about such people and the means by which they have healed themselves, some are even written by medical practitioners!

In my 25 years as a professional healer I have been privileged to assist in and facilitate many such healings. For treatment to be successful, early diagnosis is extremely advantageous, giving the person time to address the underlying causes. The first priority in a holistic approach is alleviation of the stress which has caused the body’s immune system to malfunction allowing cancerous cells to develop undetected and unchecked.

Nutrition & lifestyle play a big part too. Whilst surgery and chemotherapy are options, there are other less aggressive curative agents which can be effective in halting and reversing the proliferation of metastasising cells without noxious side effects. From a Mind-Body perspective, a complete cure involves getting to the psycho-emotional roots of what may have caused the cancer in the first place – often years or even decades before its symptoms first appeared – and healing them.

It is not my intention here to diminish the huge challenge laid down to those of us who have faced or are presently facing a diagnosis of cancer, nor to diminish the massive efforts of all those fighting cancer, by whatever means, in homes and hospitals around the world.

Like many of you, I too have lost people near and dear to me and shared their heroic battle for life.  But rather than a diagnosis of cancer being a death sentence, let it be an invitation to reclaim one’s Life in the full sense of the word, and become a wiser and more empowered person as a result. Rather than meeting the shocking news with helplessness and prayers for a cure, BE the answer to the prayer! Read the countless inspiring accounts of those who have fought the battle and won, and believe…there can be a cure for cancer.
