The Axarquia lies just across the water from Morocco, resulting in the Axarquia often having a warm African air on the coast. Yet to the north lies the high Sierra Nevada which is the the most popular skiing area of Spain from October until May. The Sierra Nevada keeps the cold north winds away, yet it's only 2 hours drive from the coast to hit the slopes. Mild winters can be enjoyed on the coast, often sunny winter weather is contrasted by the white capped mountain ranges. The difference in climate from the coast and inland is noticeable, inland the temperatures are higher in summer and cooler in winter. The varied weather in Axarquia attracts different types of tourists. Mild winters are great for hill walkers visiting during the winter, also attracting skiers and boarder because of its close proximity to the slopes of the Sierra Nevada. The hot dry summers attract the sun worshippers and those looking for a great beach holiday.
